Secret Connecticut: A guide to the weird, wonderful, and obscure!

About this event
Author, Travel Writer, Editor Anastasia "Stasha" Healy tells us surprising stories from her book Secret Connecticut: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure, such as the Connecticut residents who were president before George Washington, flew before the Wright brothers, and inspired the character of Indiana Jones; where you can go on safari or race a chariot; and how we ended up with America’s smallest Native American reservation.

Anastasia "Stasha" Mills Healy is the author of Secret Connecticut: A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful, and Obscure . Formerly an editor at Condé Nast Traveler, Fodor’s, NYC & Company, and Travel Agent, Stasha is an award-winning freelance writer and editor penning travel features for publications including Time Out and Frommer’s. Wheeler’s 37th Annual Golf Classic

Wheeler’s 37th Annual Golf Classic Set for September 14, 2022 At The Country Club of Farmington
Mutual of America Financial Group Is Presenting Sponsor for Fourth Year in a Row; Longtime Supporter, People’s United Bank, Returns as Platinum Dinner Sponsor
FARMINGTON, Conn. (February 16, 2022) – Wheeler’s 37th Annual Wheeler Golf Classic, presented by Mutual of America Financial Group for the fourth consecutive year, will take place at The Country Club of Farmington on Wednesday, September 14, 2022. Registration is open, and sponsors, players, and prize donors are welcome.
“We are thrilled to welcome back Mutual of America Financial Group as our Presenting Sponsor, as well as longtime event supporter and friend, People’s United Bank, as our Platinum Dinner Sponsor,” said Sabrina Trocchi, PhD, MPA, president and chief executive officer, Wheeler. “Proceeds from this year’s event will support our Basic Needs Fund, which is an essential resource as our patients of all ages continue to weather the long-term emotional and economic effects of the pandemic.
“Our event sponsors, players, prize donors, and friends play an instrumental role in our ability to address pressing community needs. We are always so grateful for their support of our mission and the individuals and families we serve,” Trocchi added.
In 2021, the Golf Classic raised $52,000 to support Wheeler’s community health centers in Bristol, Hartford, New Britain, Plainville, and Waterbury, as well the Basic Needs Fund, bringing the total amount raised since its inception to more than $1.3 million.
Wheeler's Basic Needs Fund addresses environmental and social factors that interfere with a patient’s health and well-being, but which are not addressed by other means of funding and allows Wheeler’s community health workers to address environmental and other conditions that might lead to poor health outcomes. Since 2018, contributions to the Basic Needs Fund have made a measurable difference in the lives of more than 5,500 patients.

2022 Mum Festival - 60 Years

Save the Date! September 23-25
Friday, 5:00-9:30 pm
Saturday, 12:00-9:30 pm
Sunday, 12:00-6:00 pm
Location: Memorial Boulevard

We are in the process of planning the 2022 Mum Festival. The Mum Festival will be celebrating 60 years this year!! We are planning a big celebration to honor 60 years of Mum Festival, with a Birthday Celebration later in the year! We are also planning Fireworks for Festival Friday as well. The Bristol Exchange Club, producers of the Mum Festival, will also be celebrating 80 years supporting the Bristol Community. As always we need to work with the City of Bristol which funds one third of the festival budget. The applications and Grant requests were submitted in March. This is the city’s marque event, and draws thousand of spectators each year, which in turn significantly helps out our local businesses as well as marketing our city. We will be returning home on Memorial Boulevard for the festival now that construction projects are nearly completed. So more to come!! Stay turned to this page, which will be updated monthly as we get more information.

About this event
IN ONE OF THE MOST DRAMATIC AERIAL BATTLES OF WORLD WAR II...

Thirty-five 445th Bomb Group B-24 Liberators and 336 men who make up their crews, suffered the greatest single-day loss to a group from one airfield in aviation warfare history, all within six minutes.

Twenty-five of the heavy bombers are downed inside of Germany’s borders; three crash land--two in France and one in Belgium; two make forced landings at an emergency field in England; and another crashes after it makes it home but is waved off to try again. All tolled, only four B-24s of the original thirty-five return safely to base at Tibenham.

117 airmen of the Mighty Eighth’s 445th are killed in action, 121 are taken prisoner, and only 98 are returned to duty.
--Kassel Mission Historical Society

Hosted by: author and oral historian, Aaron Elson.
